Mr Godfrey Tichaona Magijani is the Director of Housing and Social Services for the Municipality of Kariba since 2018. He worked for the Department of Social Services within the Ministry of Public Service Labour and Social Welfare as a District Social Services Officer. He joined Municipality of Kariba as a Welfare Officer in 2005. He rose through the ranks to become an Assistant Director of Housing and Community Services a post he held until his current appointment to the position of Director in February 2018. He is experienced in the field of Community Development and has vast experience in Housing and Projects management.

OVERALL DUTIES OF THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Housing and Community Services is mandated by council to provide housing, welfare and community services in order to: reduce/eliminate homelessness, to provide commercial, industrial, institutional and other business stands, to promote poverty-intervention strategies like vending, small to medium enterprises development, skills training, public works and welfare programmes for vulnerable groups AND to empower socially disadvantaged groups.

Sections falling under this Department are

Housing Administration

The Department of Housing is the custodian of all council land and housing stock and the Department is responsible for land management, planning of new housing schemes and implementation of the same, administration of leases and interfacing with the community on all Council housing issues.

Welfare & Community Services

The Department of Housing and Community Services is responsible for the management and maintenance of community facilities and infrastructure such as Nyamhunga hall, Mahombekombe Hall, Mahombekombe Amptheatre, Pat Mclean Theatre, Mahombekombe communal toilets, Nyanhewe Primary school and Mahombekombe secondary school, Nyamhunga stadium Chaminuka stadium and Kariba Cemetery.

Parks & Gardens

The Parks and Gardens section is in charge of maintenance of all parks and gardens to meet the town’s vision being ‘To be the ultimate tourist destination’.

Markets and Shops

The Department of Housing is responsible for the development, management and maintenance of all markets and vendor marts within the town. It is also the Housing department’s responsibility to maintain cleanliness of the same.

Public Health

The Department of Housing is responsible for the control and prevention of diseases in the community, overseeing licencing of businesses and premises as well as responsible for Solid Waste Management ie refuse collection and disposal.

Primary Health Care

The Department of Housing is responsible for provision of primary health care through Nyamhunga and Mahombekombe clinics.

Fire and Ambulance

The Department of Housing is responsible for provision of ambulance services and provision of fire brigade and fire fighting services.
